Box Score The No. 1 University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team bested the Waterloo Warriors 5-3 at Back Campus Fields on Saturday, October 16.
With the win, the Blues secure first place in the OUA and seal an undefeated regular season with a record of 8-0-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED: A back and forth first quarter saw both the Blues and Warriors make their way onto the score sheet. The Waterloo, Ont. based team opened the scoring two minutes into play, by way of Mikayla Hobson. The Blues struck back in the final minute of the first quarter through fourth-year midfielder Madeline Sherwood.
The Warriors found their way onto the front foot in the second quarter scoring back-to-back goals in the 27th and 29
th minutes. However, the Blues offence rallied back to score four unanswered goals through the third and fourth quarters.
Second-year standout Molly Koop launched the Blues comeback, scoring two minutes into the third quarter. Third-year forward Sam McCrory tied things up just seven minutes later. Pulling the Blues into the lead was veteran midfielder Emily Ziraldo. Ziraldo's made the most of McCrory assist to put the Blues ahead with three minutes remaining in the third quarter.
Koop sealed the victory for the Blues in the 47
th minute, deflecting a shot from Ziraldo.
Third-year goalie Deepi Gill earned the win in net for the Blues.
UP NEXT: The Blues earn a buy into the OUA Semifinals. Toronto will await the conclusion of the OUA Quarterfinals to find out their opponent. The game is set for Saturday, October 22 at Back Campus Fields.
