The No. 1 University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team downed the No. 3 Guelph Gryphons 3-0 in Guelph on Friday, October 14.
With the win, the Blues move into first-place in the OUA East division with a record of 7-0-1. Dethroning their crosstown rivals the No. 4 York Lions (6-2-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED: A strong defensive showing from the Gryphons held the Blues until halfway into the first-quarter. At this time, fourth-year forward Sam McCrory opened the scoring for the Blues.
The Blues scored again in the second-quarter as third-year midfield Madeline Sherwood and second-year standout Molly Koop combined to extend the Blues lead to two.
The third-quarter saw a stalemate with neither team able to best the other side. However, this would change in the fourth. With five-minutes remaining in play, first-year Elizabeth Assimes scored to seal the victory for Toronto.
