BLUES DROP HOME OPENER TO EXCALIBUR

The University of Toronto Blues men's lacrosse kicked off their much-anticipated 2021 season vs the Trent Excalibur on Sunday night (Sept 19) under the lights at Varsity Stadium. With returning seasoned veteran Jackson Hickey, the Blues had outstanding leadership to lean on for their home opener.

Trent opened the scoring with three straight goals on Blues goalie Macon Jeffreys, who had made several incredible stops early and would continue to make highlight reel saves throughout the rest of the game. The Blues defence, anchored by 2019 all-Canadian Sam Gaskin, would shut the door on the Trent attack until the third quarter. Thomas Dunnett scored his first CUFLA goal (assisted by Connor Smith) with a strong face dodge around his defender and smooth finish to end the quarter 3-1.

Heading into the second quarter, 2019 U of T leading scorer Darren Elliott took matters into his own hands and scored an impressive goal with an outside shot. The rest of the quarter would be a defensive chess match. Elliott would then open the third quarter, scoring his second of the game with a great inside feed from Alex Acosta, tying the score 3-3.

Unfortunately, from there Trent would score seven unanswered goals to end the game 10-3.

"The score did not reflect the overall tone of the game," said Varsity Blues head coach Jon Moore. "Our team played well and we learned a lot. We have 15 freshmen and the game was within one goal for the majority of the game."

UP NEXT: The Blues take on the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, September 25.
