The University of Toronto men's hockey program is pleased to announce that former Wellington Dukes assistant captain Ben Woodhouse has accepted his offer of admission and committed to playing for the Varsity Blues, beginning in the 2021-22 season.
Â
The 5-foot-9, 175-pound forward from Hamilton, Ont., played two and a half seasons for the Dukes, where he racked up 33 goals and 68 assists for 101 points and 171 penalty minutes in 110 OJHL games played.
Â
"Ben will bring lots of energy and jam to our group," said Varsity Blues head coach Ryan Medel. "He's a versatile forward who plays with passion and doesn't shy away from the high-traffic areas of the ice. I give him credit. He took a leap of faith by heading to the BCHL in January, when the status of their season was still unknown. But the decision paid off and I think that experience and having a 20 year-old season will help as he prepares to transition to our level."
Â
Woodhouse notched six goals and nine assists in eight games to earn player of the month honours in November 20. He was then traded to the West Kelowna Warriors of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), where he has amassed three goals and five assists for eight points and 21 penalty minutes in 19 games.
Â
"I choose the University of Toronto because of the level of both education and hockey that the school provides," said Woodhouse. "Being ranked very highly in both areas and being things I am very passionate about, I felt it to be the perfect fit to spend my next four years. I am looking forward to getting back in the classroom and meeting the guys on the team."
Woodhouse will begin his studies in social science at U of T's Woodsworth College this fall.
