Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

BLUES UPSET NO. 8 LAKERS TO SECURE PLAYOFF BERTH

In a statement victory, rookie standout Hannah Harkin scored two first-half goals to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the No. 8 Nipissing Lakers on Friday night (Oct. 29) in North Bay, Ont.

With the win, the Blues improve to 6-3 and move into second place in the OUA Central division, handing the previously unbeaten Lakers (8-1) their first loss of the season. The McMaster Marauders (5-2-2) sit in third place, one point back of the Blues with one game remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Harkin, who now ranks second in the OUA with nine goals on the year, opened the scoring in the 19th minute as fellow rookie Anne Yeomans perfectly-placed a throw-in inside the box for Harkin to bury.

Later in the first half, Yeomans chased down a ball and sent a nice cross to Harkin, who one-timed it off her left foot into the net. The Blues were then awarded a penalty kick after a handball in the box and first-year defender Hannah Chown made no mistake, finding the bottom right corner of the net in the 38th minute.

Toronto was up 3-0 after 45 minutes of action.

The Lakers pressed in the second half and finally got on the board in the 73rd minute as Jennifer Milligan finished off a nice through ball; however, that was all that Nipissing could muster.

Fifth-year goalkeeper Levanta Staggolis made seven saves in the victory.

UP NEXT: The Blues host the Lakers this Sunday, October 31 in their regular-season finale at Varsity Stadium. Playoff positioning will be on the line as the game kicks off at 12 p.m.
