Ontario University Athletics (OUA), under the direction of its Board of Directors, announces the cancellation of all OUA-sanctioned sport programming and championships up to December 31, 2020. This conclusion was based on provincial public health guidelines and with the health and well-being of all OUA participants at the forefront.
Â
"While this has been a challenging course of action for all involved, the health and safety of our student-athletes and all participants remain paramount", said Gord Grace, OUA president and CEO. "Even though we will not have the opportunity to celebrate our student-athletes on the field during the first term, they remain at the heart of what our organization is about and we will continue to work toward achieving a safe return to play when the time is right to do so."
Â
Canada West (CW) and the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) have made a similar decision. The RSEQ in Quebec is has not made a decision as of yet.
Â
The OUA has confirmed the status of the winter season will be announced later in the fall term.
Â
"Most Canadian universities have now announced that they will offer remote learning options for students", states Beth Ali, executive director of athletics at the University of Toronto. "This move, coupled with concerns about ensuring the health and safety concerns for intercollegiate participants, has led both the OUA and U SPORTS to the decision of canceling all provincial and national competition and sanctioned events for the fall term."
Â
This decision applies, provincially and nationally, to all varsity sport programs, including those that do not compete in OUA and U SPORTS.
Â
The University of Toronto Varsity Blues program is still actively planning for the fall, and is committed to ensuring that we can continue to provide an engaging experience for our student-athletes. In partnership with our coaches, we will expand on current remote training programs and opportunities for teams to connect online, and when possible, will open up in-person training programs subject to Public Health and University of Toronto guidance.
Â
These are extraordinary times but the Varsity Blues program and our student-athletes, coaches, staff, faculty and alumni alike are a passionate, committed and resilient group. We will adapt and innovate and will emerge stronger.
