Our Under Armour Game of the Week features the Varsity Blues women's hockey team hosting the Laurier Golden Hawks in U of T's second annual Pride Game this Friday, January 10 at Varsity Arena.
Â
The puck drops at 7 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale
here. The game will also be streamed live on OUA.tv.
Â
Limited edition Varsity Blues pride gear will be on sale, with a portion of the sales being donated to the U of T Sport and Recreation's equity ideas fund, supporting student-led equity initiatives on campus since 2013. All proceeds from the second intermission's chuck-a-puck will also be donated.
Â
The Blues have been at the fore front in organizing the event to celebrate the LGBTQ2Â community. There will be multiple organizations at the event, such as You Can Play, U of T Positive Space and The519, with lots of prizes and booths set up to generate awareness, share educational pieces and promote programming and resources available in the community and on campus.
Â
The Varsity Blues are 10-4-0-0 (W-L-OTW-OTL) and sit in second place in the OUA standings, one point behind the York Lions (10-4-0-1) with a game in hand.
Â
U of T has been dominant defensively this season, allowing a mere 19 goals in 14 games, with the next best teams allowing 27 goals against. This is in large part thanks to the goaltending duo of Erica Fryer and Madeline Albert.
Â
Fryer holds a .935 save percentage over eight starts, while Albert leads the OUA with a .968 save percentage in six starts so far this season.
Â
The Blues defensive corps is also as strong as ever. Reigning OUA defender of the year and 2018-19 all-Canadian Cristine Chao, as well as third-year standout Gabrielle De Serres rank fourth among OUA defencemen with seven points apiece.
Â
The Golden Hawks sit in 11th place with a 1-8-1-4 record. This will be the first of two meetings for the Blues and Hawks, with the second set for Saturday, January 25 in Waterloo.
