The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat the No. 10 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks, 38-34, on Saturday night (Sept. 7) at University Stadium in Waterloo, Ont.
Â
It marks Toronto's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the Blues upset the No. 2 Ottawa Gee-Gees on Oct. 2, 2010. It also marks U of T's first victory over Laurier since Sept. 2, 2013
Â
FROM HEAD COACH GREG MARSHALL: "We got down 17-0 again but we kept fighting and found a way to pull it out at the end. We made some plays to get back in the game and then we started believing that we could pull it out. We had an opportunity at the end and we took advantage of it and won the game. Hopefully we're just getting started. We've done some good things but there's a long way to go in the season."
Â
TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year quarterback Clay Sequeira went 18-for-32 for 322 yards and four touchdowns. Will Corby led all players with five receptions for 103 yards and two majors, while fellow third-year receiver Nolan Lovegrove had three catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning-grab with 40 seconds remaining in the game.
Â
Second-year running back Adam Williams rushed 11 times for a career-high 69 yards, while third-year linebacker Daniel Solaroli notched a career and game-high 7.5 tackles in the win.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The home team built a 17-0 lead after the first quarter, but the Blues responded on their first two plays of the second frame as Sequeira found Nick Stadnyk for a 40-yard gain and then hit Lovegrove with a 36-yard pass for the major.
Â
On the first play of the ensuing drive, third-year defensive back Caleb Zigby picked off Laurier quarterback Connor Carusello and returned it 25 yards for the touchdown to bring the Blues back within three.
Â
Toronto took their first lead of the game on their next drive as Sequeira capped off a five-play, 75-yard series with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Corby. That advantage was short-lived, however, as Laurier's Levondre Gordon's scored on a 12-yard rushing major.
Â
Fourth-year Blues kicker Ethan Shafer kicked a career-long 44-yard field goal on the last play of the half to bring the Blues within one (25-24) at the midway point of the game.
Â
Toronto regained the lead midway through the third quarter as Corby hauled in a 38-yard pass from Sequeira. The Blues held a six-point lead (31-25) heading into the fourth quarter.
Â
Back-to-back Laurier field goals tied the game at 31-31 with 7:42 remaining and the Golden Hawks took the lead with their fourth field goal of the night with 1:31 remaining. The Blues remained calm and closed out the win as Sequeira connected a 57-yard pass with Lovegrove with 40 seconds to go on the clock.Â
Â
UP NEXT: The Blues head into their bye week and return to action on Saturday, September 21 when they host the Queen's Gaels at Varsity Stadium. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. Advance tickets are on sale
