The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team dropped a 37-33 decision to the Queen's Gaels on Saturday, September 21 at Varsity Stadium.
FROM HEAD COACH GREG MARSHALL:
"We just have to play better. I give credit to Queen's they did a lot of good things, but we were our own worst enemies."
"I told the guys this: they've created this situation where before there weren't any expectations on them, when you win a couple games that changes and people have expectations for you. How do handle that going forward?"
TORONTO STATS: Clay Sequeira went 25-for-47 for 345 passing yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing 11 times for 110 yards.
Daniel Diodati led the Blues receivers with 134 receiving yards, while Nolan Lovegrove, Michael Lehmann, and Adam Williams all recorded touchdowns.
Fifth-year linebacker Damoy Robinson led the Blues with 10.5 tackles, while Jordan Gillespie had two tackles and one interception for a 26-yard return and Kalvin Zhou notched another interception for no gain.
HOW IT HAPPENED: After the Gaels got out to an early 11-0 lead, the Blues got on the board as Clay Sequeira connected a six-yard pass with Lehmann to cap off a seven-play, 75-yard drive.
Gaels quarterback Ryan Licandro would later find Richard Burton for the major. Following the touchdown, the Gael's would extend their lead to 21 – 9, thanks to a Ben Hadley field goal. The Blue's special team's would answer back twice before the end of the second quarter shrinking the Gael's lead to 21-14.
At the beginning of third quarter, Gaels receiver Richard Burton recorded his second touchdown of the game before Ethan Shafer's field goal would see the Gaels lead shrink to 28-17. Clay Sequeira's 5-yard shovel pass to Adam Williams saw the Blues close the gap to 28-24 before the third quarter ended.
The Gaels opened the scoring in the fourth quarter as Rasheed Tucker, would record an 11-yard rushing major. The Blues would immediately answer back as Sequeira and Nolan Lovegrove would connect over 18-yards for the touchdown.
Unfortunately, the fourth quarter surge wouldn't be enough as the Blues would come up short.
