The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team were looking to even their 1-2 record when they took on the McMaster Marauders Sunday night (Sept 29) at Varsity Stadium. Toronto came away with a 10-7 victory.
McMaster started strong going up 2-0 less than five minutes into the first quarter. Middle Justin Morandin got the Blues on the board with his first goal of the season. The Marauders scored again to go ahead 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
Attack AJ Masson opened the scoring in the second quarter, putting Toronto back within one. McMaster would score once, while the Blues scored three consecutive goals. Attack Darrin Elliott scored a man-up goal, assisted by Alex Emerson and added a second goal later in the frame. Davis Bottomley, assisted by Brandon Vogan, had the fourth Toronto goal of the quarter. The Marauders would tally another to tie up the game. Toronto goalie Macon Jeffreys made a point blank save with only two seconds on the game clock to keep the score even at the half.
McMaster did take the lead to open the third quarter but Toronto came back with two goals by Masson (assisted by Jackson Hickey) and Elliott's third of the game (assisted by Emerson). The Blues led 7-6 after three.
The Marauders tied up the game once more scoring first to open the final quarter. Toronto finished the game with three unanswered goals to finally pull away for the win. Middies Jackson Hickey, Aidan Guld (assisted by Hickey) and Bottomley with his second of the game (assisted by Morandin) rounded out the Blues scoring for the 10-7 victory.
"We did a lot of things right tonight. Kaden Jackson was great on the draws, we were very good on winning the loose ball battles and it might have been a different outcome if not for the goaltending of Macon Jeffreys." said Head Coach Joe Nizich.
The Blues next take on the first place Western Mustangs on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1:00 pm at Varsity Stadium.
