The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's golf team won the 2019 Waterloo Women's Invitational at Cambridge Golf Club.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Mackenzie Rice shot spectacular rounds of 75 and 73 to finish in second place individually, following a 1-hole playoff with Waterloo's Elanna Lachaine-DeMarchi.
"I'm really happy with the way I played today," said Rice. "I hit a wedge to about two feet for a birdie on 16 to cut the lead to one, and then holed an 8-footer on 18 to get to a playoff."
First-year Sara Cumby of Toronto placed third with 151 after a final round of 72. Cumby's 72 would tie as the lowest count of the day.
Third-year Blue, Ellice Hong chipped in with a pair of 82s to finish in ninth place overall.
The host team from Waterloo had the first round lead at 230, with the Blues sitting 6 strokes back, and the University of Windsor Lancers in third. The Blues made up the difference in second round edging out a three-stroke victory. Waterloo won the silver medal, and Windsor claimed the team bronze.
"It was a great weekend of golf for the team," said Blues assistant coach Ana Peric. "Everyone was ready to play and had a positive approach."
UP NEXT: The Blues return to action when they host the 2019 OUA Golf Championships at Angus Glen Golf Club on October 6-8.
