The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's golf team claimed their fourth consecutive provincial banner and veteran standout Laura Upenieks won the individual title as the 2015 OUA championships wrapped up Tuesday evening (Oct. 20) at Oshawa Golf & Curling Club.
Toronto finished with a final score of 471 to claim an OUA-leading fifth banner since the inception of women's golf in 2005. Western has claimed four (2005-08) and Waterloo two (2010-11). U of T placed an amazing 26 strokes ahead of the silver-medalist Waterloo Warriors (497). The Western Mustangs came third with a score of 510.
Toronto's men catapulted up the team standings on Day 2, finishing as the silver medalists with a combined team score of 608. The Waterloo Warriors successfully defended their title with a 589.
Seven-year veteran Laura Upenieks claimed the Judy McCrae Trophy by one stroke, shooting a two-day total of 154, including a tournament-low round of 74 on Day 2.
"It's been an incredible four years," said Upenieks. "To pull it off four years in a row against such tough competition is really fulfilling. To win double gold, the one that was always eluding me, it's really special."
Sophomore standout Ana Peric was right behind her with a 155 (76, 79), earning the individual silver medal for the second straight season.
Sarah Dunning, last year's OUA individual champion, placed tied for fourth with a 162 (85, 77), with rookie Kelsey Fuchs finishing 12th with a 170 (90,80). Upenieks, Peric, and Dunning were all named OUA first-team all-stars.
Ryan Tsang led Toronto's men with a bronze medal individual finish, shooting a 148, including a tournament-low round of 70 on Day 2. Tsang was also named an OUA first-team all-star. Teammate Gordie Gibson tied for 20th with a two-day total of 154 (77, 77), while both Tyler Miehe and Marcus Lam shot 157.
