The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team kept their undefeated streak alive, defeating the two-time OUA reigning champion York Lions on Sunday morning (Sept. 22) at York University.
Â
The win snapped York's 25-game unbeaten streak in OUA regular season action, dating back to 2017. Toronto is the only remaining undefeated team and sits atop the OUA standings at the midway point of 2019.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: After a scoreless first quarter, Blues veteran Emily Ziraldo opening the scoring with a goal off a penalty corner in the 21st minute. Third-year standout Anna Costanzo then scored to put the Blues up by two just before the half.
Â
The Lions cut the lead in half as Haley Bannister found the back of the net early in the fourth quarter, but third-year UMass Lowell River Hawks transfer Katie Lynes added an insurance marker in the final five minutes to round out the scoring.
Â
Elizabeth O'Hara earned the win in net for the Blues.
