BLUES FALL TO DEFENDING CHAMPS

The Varsity Blues took on the Western University Mustangs on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 6) at Varsity Stadium.  It was a close game for three and a half quarters but the Mustangs scored a number of goals late in the game to win 11-4.

Western opened the scoring early but Toronto responded less than two minutes later on a goal by middie Alex Emerson, assisted by attack Jason Barnable.  The Mustangs scored again in the quarter to take a slight lead, 2-1.

Western scored first in the second quarter and again Toronto responded with two goals to tie the game at 3-3.  Scoring for the Blues were attack Darren Elliot (assisted by Barnable) and Aidan Guld on a man-up goal assisted by fellow middie Davis Bottomley.  The Mustangs scored twice more in the period to lead 5-3 at the half.

The third quarter was a tight defensive affair, with both teams scoring once each.  Elliott had his second of the game, assisted by Guld.  The score at the end of the third period was 6-4 Western.

The strong defensive play continued mid-way through the fourth quarter when Toronto, trying to pressure even more, started to take penalties.  The Mustangs took advantage, scoring five times in the period, three on man-up opportunities.  Final score 11-4 for Western.

The Blues travel to St. Catherines Friday night, Oct. 11th to play Brock University.
