BLUES LATE SURGE FALLS SHORT

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team fell 16-8 to the No. 4 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders on Saturday, October 5 at Varsity Stadium.

FROM HEAD COACH GREG MARSHALL: "Our guys played well in all areas. That was a good football game. There was a lot of guys making a lot of plays it just happened to be on the defensive side for both teams."

"Our guys are excited and we're looking forward to the next opportunity."

TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year quarterback Clay Sequeira went 22-for-41 for 205 yards on the day. Sequeira found second-year running back Adam Williams with a majority of his targets. Williams would record seven receptions for 70 yards in addition to his 37 yards on the ground.

Third-year receiver Nolan Lovegrove made four receptions for 37 yards, while Grant LeGood had three catches for 36 yards in the loss.

The Blues defence had a standout performance as fifth-year linebacker Damoy Robinson lead the team with 8.5 tackles, while fellow linebacker Daniel Solaroli recorded 3.5 tackles and an interception.

In the secondary, fifth-year defensive back Jordan Gillespie claimed 5.5 tackles, while fourth-year safety Jamal Johnson notched two tackles and an interception.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Marauders got out to an early 3-0 lead, before the Blues would answer back with a field goal of their own.

The Blues and Marauders were locked at 3-3 heading into the second as both defences shined.

The Marauders broke the stalemate midway through the second quarter when Andreas Dueck connected a 49-yard pass with second-year receiver Xander Tachinski. They went onto add a 14-yard field goal before the end of the quarter. Toronto was down 13-3 at halftime.

Early in the third quarter, Blues fourth-year safety Jamal Johnson would swing the momentum in the home team's favour with an interception for a gain of eight yards.

The momentum continued as the Blues special teams recorded both a safety and a field goal early in the fourth quarter. Down by five, the Blues continued to press, however, a field goal by the Marauders would cap off the scoring.

UP NEXT: The Blues are off to York University to take on the York Lions next Friday, October 11 at York Lions Stadium.
