The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team won their fourth straight game to clinch third place in the West Division and secured home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs. This was achieved by defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 12-4 Sunday night (Oct 27) at Varsity Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues took the lead with early goals by middle Jackson Hickey (assist Darren Elliott) and Elliott (assist AJ Masson). Laurier scored to narrow the lead to 2-1 Toronto after the first quarter.
Laurier scored again to start the second before Masson (assist Aidan Guld) and Elliott (assist Alex Emerson) scored on a man up situation to stretch the lead to 4-2 at the half.
The third quarter started with a Laurier goal before Toronto answered with five straight goals to take control of the game. Elliott scored three more (assists Davis Bottomley, Masson and Brendan Vogan) while Guld (assist Elliott) and attack Jason Barnable (assist Elliott) both found the back of the net as well. The score after three was 9-3 for the Blues.
Toronto scored three more times in the fourth quarter while only conceding one from the Golden Hawks to seal the win. Masson (assist Vogan) had his second of the game, middle Sean Power scored his first goal of the year on a nice full field rush, and Guld (assist Barnable) added his second of the game.
Elliott led all scorers with 5 goals and 3 assists. His 22 goals for the year tie him for the lead in goals in CUFLA's West Division and a tie for second overall in the league. Jason Barnable's finished third overall in assists and second in the West Division.
UP NEXT: The Blues take on the Guelph Gryphons in the first round of the playoffs Saturday, November 2, at 1:00 pm at Varsity Stadium.
