The Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team extended their win streak to three games with a 6-5 win over the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday afternoon in Guelph.
Toronto took momentum from Thursday night's overtime win over McMaster to roll to a 4-0 lead over the Gryphons in the first quarter. Attack AJ Masson opened the scoring, assisted by middie Brendan Vogan. Vogan then followed up with a shorthanded goal. The Blues later added two man-up goals by attack Darren Elliott, assisted by Jason Barnable and Aidan Guld, assisted by Masson.
Guelph got on the board to start the second quarter. Toronto answered with another man-up goal by middie Davis Bottomley, assisted by Masson. Guelph scored once more to make the score at the half 5-2 for Toronto.
The third quarter was all Guelph as they scored twice to narrow the Blues lead to 5-4.
The final period was a real nail bitter. Barnable scored (assist Elliott) to stretch Toronto's lead to two. Barnable's goal was the former CUFLA Rookie of the Year and 2018 All Canadian's team record 200th career point. The Gryphons scored with just under six minutes left and continued to press for the tying goal. The Blues defence stiffened and didn't let Guelph score again, even as they played one man short for a total of three minutes at the end of the game.
"Needless to say it was a big win. The defence played exceptionally well and Kaden Jackson was big again on the draws. But we don't win if Macon Jeffreys doesn't have a terrific game in goal. He made 24 saves, many of a highlight reel nature." stated head coach Joe Nizich. " And it was great to see Barney get his 200th point on the game winner."
Toronto closes out the regular schedule against Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night at 7:00 pm on Varsity Stadium.
