The Varsity Blues evened their record at 4-4 after a 7-6 overtime win at McMaster University on Thursday night (Oct. 17).
Â
The Marauders opened the scoring with two goals before the Blues got on the scoreboard late in the first quarter on a goal by Jason Barnable, assisted by fellow attack man Darren Elliott. The score was 2-1 for McMaster after the first quarter.
Â
McMaster went ahead by two goals midway through the second quarter but Elliott scored soon afterwards (assist Barnable) to narrow the lead to one. The teams exchanged goals the rest of the period as the Marauders led 4-3 at the half. Elliott scored his second of the game assisted by defenceman Zach Holmes. Â
Â
Holmes made his presence felt as the 2018 all-Canadian returned to the line up after missing most of the season due to injury. He and the rest of the defence tightened up in the second half, allowing only two goals the rest of the game. Â
Â
McMaster scored first in the third quarter but the Toronto offence started to role, scoring twice to tie the game at 5-5 on goals by Elliott and Barnable, both assisting on each other's goal. It was Elliot's seventh goal in the last two games and Barnable's 11th point. The offence was aided by the Blues players on the draw, especially draw man Kaden Jackson, who won the majority of the draws, giving the offence plenty of scoring chances. Â
Â
Toronto finally took the lead at 9:51 of the fourth quarter on middie Brendon Vogan's goal but couldn't hold on as the Marauders scored with only 1:48 on the game clock to send the game into sudden death overtime. Â
Â
The Blues again won the draw to open the overtime period and took advantage less than two minutes later when middie Davis Bottomley scored the game winner for a 7-6 Toronto victory. Â
