Looking to end a two game losing streak, the Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team played the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday night (Oct. 13) at Varsity Stadium. Despite a big second half comeback by the Voyageurs, Toronto came away with an 11-8 win.
The Blues got off to a hot start, scoring four times in the first quarter to only one goal for Laurentian. Middie Aidan Guld had two of the goals, assisted by attack men Darren Elliott and Jason Barnable. Elliott and Barnable had the other two goals, each assisting on the other's goal. Toronto led 4-1 after the first quarter.
Toronto scored another four goals in the second to only one for Laurentian to seemingly take control of the game. Elliott scored twice more (one assisted by Barnable) and Guld added his third of the game (assist Barnable). Middie Brendan Vogan added the fourth goal late in the period (assist Barnable). Toronto led 8-2 at the half.
Laurentian was not down and out by any means however. Elliott scored his fifth goal to open the third quarter (assist Barnable) but the Voyageurs scored three times in a comeback effort. Middie Davis Bottomley also scored for the Blues (assist AJ Masson). The score at the end of three quarters was 10-5 for Toronto.
The Voyageurs comeback efforts continued in the fourth quarter with another three goals to only one goal by Blues attack AJ Masson (assist Alex Emerson) to make the game close at the end. The final score was 11-8 for Toronto.
"We came out hot and executed really well but it was like a switch turned off at the half," said Varsity Blues head coach Joe Nizich. "Maybe overconfident and thinking we were going to continue to cruise, we stopped doing the things that got us the big lead. Give full credit to Laurentian. They won the second half. It's a win but we would have liked to have played well for a full 60 minutes. On the bright side, Jason Barnable had a big game feeding the others and it was great to see Elliott and Guld taking advantage of their scoring chances."
Barnable led all scorers with seven points (one goal and six assists). Elliott finished with six points on four goals and two assists, while Guld had three goals.
