BLUES CROWNED OUA CHAMPIONS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis team defeated the Western Mustangs 5-2 to win their first provincial title since 2013 as the OUA championships wrapped up on Sunday evening at Mayfair East in Markham, Ont.

Toronto topped the Brock Badgers 7-0 in semifinal action on Day 1 to book their ticket to the championship final. It marks U of T's 11th OUA banner in team history.

Third-year veteran Samar Qaedizadeh was named the 2019 OUA female player of the year following an undefeated weekend. Qaedizadeh went 2-0 in the No. 2 singles spot and 2-0 in No. 1 doubles action over the two matches.

First-year standout Pia Jhattu earned OUA female rookie of the year honours. The Oakville, Ont., native went 2-0 in the No. 2 doubles spot and 2-0 in singles action, winning once at the No. 3 match and once at the No. 4 spot.

Qaedizadeh and fellow veteran Mara Stroe were named OUA all-stars, while Nabil Tadros garnered OUA coach of the year honours.

The Blues won the doubles matches to earn the single point versus Western. Qaedizadeh teamed up with Stroe to win the No. 1 match, 8-3, while Jhattu and Andrea Kuntjoro won the No. 2 match 8-4.

U of T went onto take four of the six singles matches. Qaedizadeh won at the No. 2 spot, 7-5, 6-0, while Jhattu took the No. 4 match. Kuntjoro and Milena Music won at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots, respectively.
