BLUES DROP FINAL PRESEASON MATCH

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team were outscored 3-1 by the York Lions on Saturday afternoon (Oct 12) at Varsity Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lions got on the board first with a goal from Ava Ricker-Singh just under five minutes into the game. The Blues shut down the Lions offensive chances throughout the rest of the first period and headed to the dressing room down by one.

Toronto got into some penalty trouble midway through the second and York capitalized on it. Samantha Jones would put the Lions up by two. The Varsity Blues then got a chance of their own to answer back on the power play and they took advantage. Fourth year forward Stephanie Ayres scored to cut the Blues deficit in half. Toronto would again trail by one at the end of the frame.

The Lions came out and controlled the play in the final period, peppering Blues second year goalie Erica Fryer with 17 shots. Fryer stopped all but one, giving York back the two goal lead. Toronto was unable to get anything going and would end the preseason with a loss.

Fryer made 29 saves in a losing effort.

UP NEXT: The Blues head to Kingston to take on Queen's in their season opener this Friday (Oct 18) at 7:30pm. The Blues will be back home on October 26 at 7:00pm to take on the Windsor Lancers in their 2019 home opener at Varsity Arena.
