Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

BLUES COME OH-SO-CLOSE TO NO. 1 RAVENS

Rookie guard Inaki Alvarez led all players with a season-high 22 points as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team dropped a narrow 70-68 decision to the No. 1 Carleton Ravens on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 6) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

TORONTO STATS: Alvarez went 7-for-14 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line, while adding two boards and two assists on the night.

Fourth-year forward Nikola Paradina notched 18 points and a team-high eight boards, while fellow veteran Daniel Johansson had 11 points. Chris Barrett chipped in with eight points, while Arash Dusek had six points and three assists in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Carleton got out to a 22-13 lead after the first quarter but the Blues continued to claw their way back into the game. Toronto outscored the Ravens by three in the second and trailed 34-28 at halftime.

The Blues opened the second half on a 7-2 run and took their first lead of the game thanks to a pair of Alvarez free throws late in the third quarter. The two teams traded baskets and the Ravens took a 50-49 lead into the final frame.

Carleton powered their way to a 66-56 advantage with 3:30 remaining, but the Blues did not quit. Paradina drained two three's and completed a four-point play on the latter, but the Ravens continued to succeed at the free throw line.

Johansson notched a final three with 1.4 seconds remaining but time ran out before the Blues could complete the come back.

UP NEXT: The Blues travel to York to take on the Lions next Friday, January 11. Tip off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
