The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs, 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday, September 23 at the Old Four Tournament in Montreal.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Western's Sarah Irwin opened the scoring with 14 seconds remaining in the first period, but fifth-year Blues forward Kassie Roache evened the score late in the second frame. Toronto took the lead 5:27 into the third when Lauren Straatman found the back of the net, but Mustangs forward Hannah Irwin evened it back up five minutes later.
Overtime solved nothing and the game headed into a shootout, where Roache was the lone goal scorer. She ended the game with one goal and one assist. Blues netminder Madeline Albert made 35 saves and stopped all four Mustangs in the shoot out.
The Blues fell to the host McGill Martlets, 4-0, on Day 1 of the tournament. Rookie netminder Erica Fryer made 33 saves in the loss.
UP NEXT: The Blues wrap up their pre-season schedule in two weeks, hosting the Ryerson Rams (Oct. 5) and York Lions (Oct. 6) at Varsity Arena.
