University of Toronto Varsity Blues Nordic skier Erich Schultze broke two SkiErg world records this past month at Varsity Arena.
Â
Schultze broke theÂ
one-hour SkiErg world record for the 20-29 age group, going 16,030 metres on March 26. He went onto break theÂ
6km world record from the same age category in 21:30.0 on March 28.
Â
The second-year student at the Faculty of Law is a native of Foxboro, Mass. He came to U of T after rowing for four seasons for the Harvard Crimson. There, Schultze co-captained the lightweight team in 2013 after earning All-Ivy first team honours in 2011 and 2012.
Â
"It was great to be able to contribute to the Varsity Blues program with these records," said Schultze. "Coach Mathison and the rest of the team have been very patient and supportive as I learn this new sport. This year was a great experience and the next step is to translate my fitness into skiing fast in 2019."
Â
A SkiErg is an indoor training machine for Nordic skiiers made by Concept2, the same company that manufactures the standard indoor rower. Given that the U of T Nordic team is based in an urban environment, training tools such as the SkiErg are essential to prepare the Varsity Blues to be competitive on snow.
