The University of Toronto Varsity Blues Nordic skiing team competed at the second Ontario Cup event this past weekend (Jan. 20-21) in Sudbury.
Â
In front of her hometown crowd, fifth-year student Isabelle MacLean snagged a seventh-place finish on Day 1 and followed it up by placing eighth the next day to finish seventh overall.
Â
Andrei Vovk was the Blues top male in the field, placing 10th overall after finishing fifth and 12th throughout the weekend. Third-year student Matt McNeil took the 12th overall spot in the senior men's division, while freshmen Eamon Kelly just missed the top 10 in junior men's division, placing 11th.
Â
The conditions over the weekend were fast, which made the athletes focus more on the technical side of things. Vovk and McNeil decided to use double pole for the first time in the classic race, which means they only used their upper body the entire race.
Â
Next up on the schedule is the third Ontario Cup at Gatineau on the first weekend of February (3-4.) It marks the final tune up before OUA championships in late February.
