Under the leadership of fifth-year athlete-coaches Liam Fox and Eric Mathison, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Nordic skiing team once again head to the OUA championships this season hosted by the University of Waterloo at the Moutainview Ski Centre in Midland, Ont.
At last year's provincial championship in Ottawa, Ont., Fox earned the top result for the U of T men finishing in 16th in the 15 km classic mass start race, while earning 18th in the men's 7.5 km freestyle event. Alongside returning teammates Mathison and Matt McNeil, the trio also earned 9th in the 3 x 2.7 km relay. With the strong team showing the Varsity Blues finished sixth overall.
This season Fox has once again shined for U of T claiming sixth place in the 15 km free pursuit at the Ontario Cup event in Duntroon, Ont., in mid-January, while Mathison and fifth-year skier Andrei Vovk claimed 19th and 20th respectively.
Meanwhile, on the women's side the Varsity Blues will be looking to improve on an eighth place finish from a season ago with returning fourth-year veteran Parmida Jafari leading the charge. The neuroscience major placed 31st in last season's 10 km classic mass start race and has since seen major improvement picking up a 25th place result in the women's 10 km free pursuit at the aforementioned Ontario Cup event.
