Rookie forward Jessica Muha registered a game-high 16 points in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team to a 75-60 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in their 2018-19 home opener on Friday night (Nov. 2) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
TORONTO STATS: Muha went 8-for-10 from the floor, while adding two boards, one assist and one steal on the night. Sophomore guard Christine Jurcau added 14 points and five rebounds, while veteran forward Charlotte Collyer had 13 points and seven boards.
Nada Radonjic tallied nine points and six boards, while Sarah Bennett added eight points and seven rebounds in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Thunderbirds came out ready to play, shooting 50% from the floor and draining three from beyond the arc to take a 20-15 lead after the first quarter. Collyer rallied the Blues, scoring six points in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Jurcau followed suit, draining eight points and Muha ended the half with three straight baskets to give Toronto the 37-33 halftime lead.
U of T dominated the third quarter, outscoring Algoma 19-8, highlighted by two Jurcau three's and the Blues led by 15 heading into the final frame. Collyer and Muha continued to lead the Blues as the two teams went back-and-forth in the fourth quarter en route to the 75-60 Blues win.
