The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis team went 1-1 at the 2018 national qualifier, November 16-18, at Veneto Tennis Club.
Toronto defeated the York Lions 5-1 in semi-final action, before falling 5-0 to the Western Mustangs in the final.
Toronto 5, York 1
The Blues started out with a win in the No. 1 doubles match by Mara Stroe and Adelaida Allakhverdiyeva by a close 8-7 score vs a strong York team. This was followed by a convincing 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot Cecelia Pye and Jasmine Nguyen. Â
Stroe won the No. 1 singles match, followed by wins by No. 3 Alara Demirag, No. 4 Salma Dessouki and No. 5 Milena Music.
Western 5, Toronto 0
Stroe and Demirag were leading 4-3 in the first doubles match when it was called off due to the Western teams winning the No. 2 and 3 matches.
In singles play, the Blues started off strong with Dessouki and Music winning their first sets in the No. 4 and 5 spots, while Stroe lost a close 7-5 first set in the No. 1 position. From there, Western won four additional singles points to round out the win. Â
