The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football fell 53-21 to the No. 5 nationally-ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees on Thursday, October 4 at Varsity Stadium.

TORONTO STATS: Fourth-year quarterback Connor Ennis went 6-for-15 for 113 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game with a lower-body injury. Vince Luccisano came into the game and went 4-for-7 for 47 yards.

A pair of rookie running backs in Adam Williams and Maxwell Gyimah scored their first career touchdowns as Varsity Blues. Williams rushed 10 times for 44 yards and one major, while Gyimah had five carries for 27 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore receiver Nolan Lovegrove continued his stellar play this season with three receptions for 65 yards and one TD, while Daniel Diodati had three catches for 63 yards on the night.

Fourth-year defensive back Jordan Gillespie led all players with 10 tackles, one sack and one breakup, while veteran linebacker Lamar Foyle had 5.5 tackles in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues opened the scoring on their second drive of the game as Ennis connected on a 13-yard pass to Lovegrove. Ottawa responded with a 31-yard field goal and Toronto conceded a safety as the Blues led 7-5 after the first quarter.

The Gee-Gees found their stride in the second frame, scoring three touchdowns and one field goal. U of T responded though as Ennis found a wide-open Diodati for a 41-yard gain to set up the one-yard rushing major from Williams. Ottawa was up 29-14 at halftime.

A low-scoring third quarter saw Gee-Gees running back Dawson Odei score his second TD of the game on a one-yard run. Ottawa added to their lead when Carter Matheson scored on a 35-yard catch, his third touchdown reception of the game, and James Peter recovered a fumble and scampered 31 yards for the score.

Blues rookie running back Maxwell Gyimah capped off a six-play, 78-yard drive with a two-yard run into the end zone for his first career TD with 3:24 remaining in the fourth.

UP NEXT: The Blues head to Guelph, Ont., next Saturday, October 13 to take on the Gryphons. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
