The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team opened their 2018-19 season with a 3-2 (25-17, 15-25, 16-25, 25-12, 19-17) victory over the McMaster Marauders on Friday night (Oct. 26) at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
TORONTO STATS: Three-time OUA East player of the year Alina
Dormann notched a game-high 20.5 points off of 18 kills and two aces, and had 14 digs on the night. Second-year middle Jenna Woock had 18 points off eleven kills and six blocks.
Third-year outside hitter Brianna Patrick notched nine kills, one ace and 15 digs, while fifth-year veteran Anna Feore tallied a team-high 21 digs and added four key kills in the last two sets.
Sophomore setter Rayn Perry tallied a game-high 41 assists and 10 digs in the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The No. 4 nationally ranked Blues took an early lead in the first set, going up 16-11 at the technical timeout before taking the set 25-17. The Blues fell behind in the second set, trailing 16-9 at the technical timeout before losing 25-15.
After calling a timeout during the second set, the Blues went on a 5-0 run to close the gap entering the technical timeout down 16-13 before dropping the set 25-16.
The Blues turned the corner in the fourth set after subbing Feore in at outside and moving third-year veteran Sophia Currier to libero. U of T rode this momentum to take it 25-12 after leading 16-4 at the technical timeout.
A back-and-forth fifth set that would decide the match with the Blues relying on veterans Dormann and Feore as the difference makers. Toronto rallied from an 8-5 deficit at the fifth-set switch and a final kill from Woock would seal the victory, 19-17.
UP NEXT: Toronto's next matchup is tomorrow (Oct. 27) as they host the Brock Badgers. Opening serve is set for 6:00 p.m., at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
