The sixth seeded University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team upset the No. 3 Carleton Ravens, 1-0, in OUA playoff action on Wednesday night (Oct. 24) in Ottawa.
Third-year goalkeeper Vanna Staggolis made a couple of clutch stops en route to six saves in the clean sheet victory. The win marks Toronto's first playoff victory since 2014.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Fifth-year team captain Chelsea Cheung opened the scoring in the 13th minute. The Toronto native headed in a beautiful cross from third-year midfielder Julia Gonsalves.
The Ravens had a chance to even the score as they were awarded a penalty kick 10 minute later; however they sent their shot wide of the net.
Toronto was up 1-0 at the half.
Carleton had another chance to tie things up, when Leah Chabot found herself with a clear shot on net but Staggolis came up with a sprawling save.
10 minutes later, Staggolis rushed out of her net and tackled Emily Copeland-Dinan and the Ravens were awarded a penalty kick. Melissa Gilligan stepped up for the Ravens, but Staggolis made another beautiful diving save to maintain her clean sheet.
UP NEXT: Toronto will travel back to our nation's capital to take on the top-seeded Ottawa Gee-Gees this Sunday, October 28 at 1 p.m.
