In a nail biter, the Varsity Blues came back from a 6-2 deficit to defeat the McMaster Marauders on Sunday night (Sept. 30) at Varsity Stadium.
Despite many scoring opportunities, the Blues couldn't find the back of the net in the opening half. The teams traded goals in the first quarter, Toronto scoring on singles by Nick Pison and Jason Barnable. However, the Marauders outplayed Toronto in the second quarter on three unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead at the half.
McMaster scored again to open the third quarter to increase their lead to four. But the Blues finally found their game and outscored the Marauders 4-2 in the period to get within one. Barnable, AJ Masson, Darren Elliott and Jackson Hickey scored for Toronto.
The Blues comeback couldn't have happened without the great work of Kaden Jackson on the draws. Winning the majority of the draws gave Toronto the possessions they needed to get back in the game.
McMaster scored early in the fourth quarter to go back on top by two but Barnable and Pison scored again for U of T to tie the game at 8-8 at the 13 minute mark of the period. McMaster came back to go ahead by one with only 11 minutes left in the game.
Barnable scored his fourth of the game at 5:36 to even the score and Elliott scored the winner with only 3 minutes left. Toronto was able to run out the clock after gaining possession on the subsequent draw to gain their third win of the season against two losses.
The Blues play next at Guelph on October 4.
