Box Score Fourth-year forward Kassie Roache forced overtime with 0.6 seconds remaining in regulation, but the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team dropped a 4-3 decision to the No. 7 Guelph Gryphons on Wednesday night (Jan. 17) at Gryphon Centre Arena.
Â
With the overtime loss, the Blues are now 8-0-8-1 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and remain in eighth place, while the Gryphons improve to 11-2-4-0 and move into first place in the OUA standings
Â
The Gryphons wasted no time getting the game started as Claire Merrick finished off a nice 2-on-1 pass from Kelly Gribbons to open the scoring 3:04 into the contest. Toronto answered the call though as Stephanie Ayres tipped in a Rebecca Bourgeois point shot just over two minutes later.
Â
Guelph restored their lead midway through the first period as Kristen Jay sent a pass from behind the net to Molly Crossman, who one-timed it into the net. The Blues evened the score six minutes later as Mathilde De Serres redirected a point shot from Julia Szulewska and the two teams were tied at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.
Â
After a scoreless second period, Guelph's Merrick notched her second goal of the game to give the Gryphons a one-goal lead with 15 minutes remaining.
Â
With eight seconds remaining, an offensive zone face off and U of T's Valencia Yordanov pulled from the net, the Blues forced overtime in heroic fashion. Â Stephanie Ayres sent a blind puck from the corner to Kassie Roache in front of the net, and she deked around Gryphons netminder Valerie Lamenta to even the score with 0.6 seconds left on the clock.
Â
Overtime action went back and forth and it was the home team who earned the extra point as Miranda Lantz sped down the ice on a breakaway and slotted the puck into the top corner.
Â
Yordanov ended the night with 20 saves, while Lamenta made 24.
Â
The Varsity Blues return to the ice this Saturday, January 20 as they head to Mattamy Athletic Centre to take on the Ryerson Rams. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m.
