TORONTO DROPS HARD FOUGHT HOME BATTLE

Welcoming the Brock Badgers to Varsity Stadium on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 30), the University of Toronto Varsity Blues delivered a hard fought effort despite a 47-22 loss.

The Varsity Blues opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a penalty goal from second-year full back Faiyaz Lokhandwala.

Brock responded quickly as they delivered precision passing in a long drive down the field to record the first try of the match courtesy Ryan Hickey.

Toronto's defence would then stalemate the Badgers attack, pushing back whenever momentum appeared to be gained.

But in the 27th minute Brock broke through for the first of three tries to end the half. The first coming from Curtis Patrick, followed by a diving effort from Zachary White, and the final score right before the break from Stevie Commerford which was awarded as a penalty try, making it a 33-3 deficit for the Blues at half.

A strong second half though would see U of T outscore the Badgers 19-14.

Two tries from speedster Bryson Discombe and a powerful plunge from veteran flanker John Stewart helped lift the Blues to the strong second half performance.

Brock picked up second half tries from Wade Little and Hickey who ran in his second of the match.

Lokhandwala kicked one conversion for the Blues with two more coming from Tudor Chirila. Badgers fly half Spencer Karn kicked five conversions on the afternoon.

The Blue and White will now hit the road for two straight road games, first challenging the McMaster Marauders on Friday, October 6. Kickoff in Hamilton, Ont., is set for 4 p.m.
