BLUES TOP LAKERS ON THE ROAD

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 4-1 in exhibition action on Saturday night (Sept. 30) in North Bay, Ont.

The win marks Toronto's second straight pre-season victory after beating the Guelph Gryphons, 6-2, last night. The Blues capitalized on special teams, scoring three powerplay goals on the night.

After a scoreless first period, Nipissing opened the scoring midway through the second frame; however, the Blues responded as fifth-year veteran Corey Jackson netted the equalizer three minutes later. Sophomore defenceman Evan MacEachern scored the eventual game-winner at the 17:25 mark of the second period as Toronto headed into the second intermission with a 2-1 advantage.

The Lakers pressed to even the score in the third, outshooting Toronto 15-9, but the Blues stood tall. 2016-17 Blues leading scorer Aidan Wallace added an insurance marker with less than two minutes remaining and Casey Knight added an empty-netter to round out the scoring. Third-year standout Matthew Campagna had three assists in the win.

Rookie netminder Frederic Foulem got the start, making 14 saves, while Andrew Hunt came in at the midway point of the game and eded the night with 19 saves in the victory.

The Blues are back in action this Wednesday, October 4 as they host the Brampton Beast of the ECHL at Varsity Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
