In exhibition action at Varsity Arena on Friday night (Sept. 29), the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team picked up a big 6-2 win over the visiting Guelph Gryphons.
The Blues offence exploded in the second period with a string of four goals from four different players.
First, offensive playmaker Matt Campagna opened the scoring at the five minute mark of the period.
Then under two minutes later, fellow linemate Aidan Wallace lit up the lamp to make it a quick 2-0 lead.
The excitement continued as Hunter Atchison and Max Lindsay each found the back of the Gryphons net with powerplay markers less than a minute apart, all before the midway mark of the second period.
In the third, Guelph broke the Blues shutout effort with a goal from Manny Gialedakis and would receive another later in the period from Cody Thompson.
However, Toronto was just too much on the night as U of T also added two more in the third with first-year forward Scott Kirton rounding out the scoring for the Blues top line and Lindsay adding his second of the game.
Veteran goaltender Michael Nishi and first-year goalie Frederic Foulem split time in net for U of T with Nishi making 20 saves and Foulem picking up 14 in the combined effort.
Gryphons goaltender Matthew Cammilleri finished the night with 20 saves.
The Blue and White will look to ride the offensive momentum as they head to North Bay, Ont., tomorrow evening (Sept. 30) to challenge the Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
