Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team dropped a 43-6 decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 16) at Varsity Stadium.

The loss drops the Blues to 1-3, while the Gryphons improve to .500 with a 2-2 record through Week 4 of OUA football action.

"Guelph is a good football team. I thought we played them well," said Varsity Blues head coach Greg Gary. "Unfortunately it doesn't reflect that on the scoreboard but I thought we played them like a team that wasn't afraid. I saw some things on offence and defence that we can get better at but we played hard. There's no question about that."

Third-year quarterback Connor Ennis went 11-for-23 for 137 yards on the day. His favourite target was sophomore receiver Nick Stadyk, who had four receptions for 74 yards.

Defensively, second-year safety Austin Rosbrook led the Blues with five tackles and one forced fumble, while sophomore defensive back Patrick Pankow also had five tackles in the loss.

GUELPH STATS

Fourth-year quarterback James Roberts was 18-for-29 for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker had nine receptions for 132 yards, while Jacob Scarfone made four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Fifth-year veteran Johnny Augustine rushed 13 times for 86 yards and two majors, while also making one catch for 33 yards.

Fourth-year linebacker Luke Krol led all players with nine tackles and had one sack and one fumble recovery, while fourth-year kicker Gabriel Ferraro converted 5-of-6 field goals for the Gryphons.

GAME FLOW

Ferraro opened the scoring with a 30-yard field goal midway through the first quarter. Guelph extended their lead less than four minutes later when Roberts connected a 36-yard pass with Scarfone for the major. The Gryphons led 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Blues got on the board early in the second thanks to a 32-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Ryan Grandell; however the Gryphons padded their lead as Augustine capped off a 5-play, 45-yard drive with a two-yard rushing major midway through the quarter. Ferraro added his second field goal of the game, this one from 25-yards, to give Guelph a 20-5 lead at halftime.

Ferraro kicked his third field goal of the game to open the second half and Augustine put the Gryphons up 30-5 with a 21-yard rushing major midway through the third quarter. Ferraro added back-to-back field goals and Scarfone scored his second major of the game on a 55-yard pass from Roberts to make it 43-5 with 8:30 to go in the game. Blues defensive back Mak Stephens forced a single two minutes later to round out the scoring.

The Varsity Blues (1-3) return to action next Saturday, September 23 as they travel to take on the York Lions (0-3) in the 48th annual Red & Blue Bowl at Alumni Field. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
