THREE SOCCER STANDOUTS SELECTED FOR TEAM CANADA AT FISU 2017

This past Thursday (June 29) U SPORTS announced rosters for four teams set to represent Canada at the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei City, Chinese Taipei including men's and women's soccer which will feature three Varsity Blues standouts: Natasha Klasios, Koosha Nazemi, and Lukas MacNaughton.

Entering her third year with the Varsity Blues this fall, striker Natasha Klasios has established herself as an offensive threat over her first two seasons with the blue and white. Klasios has led U of T in scoring each of the past two years ranking fifth in the province in 2015 and third in 2016 with 11 goals each season. A two-time OUA East all-star and 2015 OUA East rookie of the year, the dynamic forward utilizes her incredible speed and finishing touch to outmanouver opponents.

Also entering his third year with U of T, defender Koosha Nazemi has been a regular fixture in the Varsity Blues lineup stifling the opposition from his right back position. A stout defensive presence, Nazemi showcases an ability to take away one half of the pitch while also pushing the offence forward with effective runs from the back end. Picking up his first career goal this past season, the Mississauga, Ont. native also shows that his abilities continue to grow.

A defensive juggernaut, Lukas MacNaughton has displayed amazing ability to both hold the back line for U of T while also contributing offensively as a key in set pieces. Showing versatility as a strong centre back or facilitating midfielder, MacNaughton has earned OUA East first team all-star recognition the past three consecutive seasons and was also named a U SPORTS second team all-Canadian in 2015. This past season the Varsity Blues captain also topped the team in scoring with seven goals, helping lead U of T to provincial bronze.

The trio will join 73 other athletes who will have the honour of donning the red and white this August as members of five teams being exclusively managed by U SPORTS. The 2017 Summer Universiade is set for Aug. 19-30 in Taipei City.
