University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball standouts Alina Dormann and Anna Feore have both been named members of the 2017 Canadian national women's indoor team, as announced by Volleyball Canada on Monday.
Â
The women's selection camp wrapped up on May 12, with head coach Marcello Abbondanza assigning 24 players (see below, with three additional reserve players) to the National Team roster.
Â
One of the highlights of the season will be FIVB World Grand Prix - one of the premier international tournaments for women's volleyball. It will take place at the Richmond Oval, in Richmond, BC from July 21 to July 23. The city will host six matches among four teams in Group 2 – Canada, Germany, Peru and Czech Republic. The team will also compete in a Pan Am Cup in Peru this June and the NORCECA Continental Championship (Trinidad) in October. The team will also train/play in Anaheim with the U.S. women's team from June 12-14. Rosters for specific events will be named at a later date.
A 6-foot-1 right side hitter, Dormann was recognized as a U SPORTS all-Canadian and the OUA East player of the year for the second consecutive season in 2016-17. The two-time OUA East first team all-star from Ottawa led the OUA and ranked second in the nation in both kills (4.39) and points (5.3) per set.
Â
A life science major, Dormann recorded double-digit points in every game this season, while notching 20 or more points five times, including a new single-game career-high of 31.5 points in a 3-2 victory over Ryerson on Nov. 25. She also topped the Blues with 36 blocks and 30 aces, displaying the overall game that has made her a key threat to any opposition.
Â
Standing at 5-foot-10, Feore is left side hitter from Stratford, Ont. She ranked second on the Blues, averaging 2.58 kills and 3.0 points per set this past season. The health & disease major also ranked third on the team with 3.03 digs per set and notched a career-high 19 points in a 3-1 win at Western on Feb. 18.
Â
Together, Dormann and Feore led the Blues to a perfect 19-0 regular season record and an OUA bronze-medal finish.
Â
Varsity Blues assistant coach
Vincenzo Mallia was also named a member of the coaching staff in February.
