Box Score With third-year forward Kassie Roache scoring her first career hat trick and fourth-year goaltender Katey Teekasingh earning her first career shutout, the No. 10 University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their fifth straight win at Varsity Arena defeating the visiting Ryerson Rams 3-0 Thursday night (Feb. 16).
With the win the Blues improve to 14-2-7-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) on the season, holding onto third place in the OUA.
It only took 55 seconds for Roache to open the scoring in the Thursday night showdown securing her first goal of the season with a nifty effort off a rebound in front of Rams goaltender Sydney Authier.
Following the goal, Ryerson intensified the pressure on U of T outshooting the Blues 12-5 in the first 20 minutes. However, Toronto starting goalie Katey Teekasingh was up to the task shutting down the Rams attack including an incredible diving effort early in the first.
Â
Roache added her second of the night late in the second frame when a long shot from third-year defenceman Julia Szulewska found its way through a crowd and onto the stick of Roache and she banged in the insurance marker to make it 2-0 Varsity Blues heading into the final 20 minutes.
Â
Then just 36 seconds into the third, Roache found herself in the right place at the right time again, as a Jana Headrick point shot delivered another rebound right to the backhand of the criminology major for her third goal of the game and first career hat trick.
Â
Meanwhile, Teekasingh would make another eight saves in the third to secure her first career shutout, stopping all 27 of Ryerson's shots on the night. The Toronto native also improved her OUA leading win percentage with the victory improving her record to 8-1 as the Blues starting goaltender this season.
The Varsity Blues will now look to keep riding high as they challenge the Brock Badgers this Saturday night (Feb. 18) at Varsity Arena in their final game of the regular season. U of T will also be honouring their graduating student-athletes prior to puck drop. All the action will be streamed live on OUA.tv with the start time set for 7 p.m.
