Fifth-year veteran Sasha Gollish finished first overall to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's cross country team to their first national title since 2002 at the 2017 U SPORTS championships on Sunday, November 12 in Victoria, B.C.

Toronto finished with 73 points, 18 points ahead of the favoured Queen's Gaels to win their third national title in program history.

"It's been 15 years since we last won and this group of girls has worked very hard this fall," said Varsity Blues head coach Ross Ristuccia. "We had a rough race at the Ontario championships but the girls really banded together in the last two weeks and they just went for it."

Appearing in her fourth U SPORTS cross country championships since being named rookie of the year in 2000, Gollish, a 35-year-old PhD in engineering education candidate, won the 8km race in 27:36.27. Gollish becomes the first Varsity Blue to win the individual national title since Megan Brown in 2006, 2008 and 2009.

"The hardest part was managing the surges, congratulations to all the girls that finished in the top 10 because they all could have won that race," said Gollish. "It was difficult trying to figure out how to recover and then when I committed to go, it was just a case of believing and going."

Second-year standout Lucia Stafford placed sixth overall in 28:18, joining Gollish as a 2017 U SPORTS first team all-Canadian.

Jazz Shukla (29:18) and Madeleine Kelly (29:58) finished 16th and 23rd, respectively, while Christiana Agustin placed 27th in 30:10.

Toronto's men placed 11th overall with 335 points. Robert Lawand was the first Varsity Blue to cross the 10km finish line in 31st with a time of 32:13. Zach Frangos was 67th in 33:26, while Jesse Chen (33:47) and Samuel Kinahan (33:55) were 75th and 79, respectively. Nick Wood placed 83rd in 34:01.

Following the race, U SPORTS All-Canadians and major award winners were presented including Toronto's Ristuccia taking home coach of the year honours, while Christian Agustin was named the student-athlete community service award winner.
