The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's tennis team defeated the Montreal Carabins 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Mayfair Parkway Club, claiming OUA bronze as hosts in Markham, Ont.
First-year sensation Mara Stroe, who served as the No. 1 doubles all weekend alongside teammate Samar Qaedizadeh and No. 2 singles, was named OUA rookie of the year, dropping only one doubles match during the grueling three-day OUA championship tournament. Stroe was also named an OUA all-star, along with Blues No. 1 singles competitor Carmen Lai.
In the final match the Varsity Blues challenged a shorthanded Montreal squad, as the Carabins conceded both a singles and doubles match to open the third-place showdown. U of T utilized the advantage with Toronto duo Cecelia Pye and Antonina Gorshenina securing the doubles round with a crucial 8-7 (7-4) tiebreak win. In singles competition, U of T claimed five victories, led by Lai and Stroe, clinching the OUA bronze.
