The Varsity Blues women's water polo team completed a four-game sweep at the Queen's Invitational with a pair of strong victories on Sunday.
Day 1 Recap
In the morning tilt, the Blues went up against McMaster in a rematch of last year's championship final. The vaunted Toronto defence proved to be impenetrable for three quarters as starting goalie Rachael Jaffe (Irvine, California) kept the Marauders off the score sheet.
The Blues went on top 2-0 in the first quarter but failed to stretch the lead in the second as the teams played to a goalless draw. The Blues created a little breathing room winning the third quarter 2-0 to go up 4-0 entering the final frame. Then the offence got untracked scoring five times en route to a 9-2 win.
Caitlyn Tiedje (Calgary) and assistant captain Ana Miroslavic (Toronto) each scored a hat trick to lead the way. Captain Ali Kraft (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) notched a pair of goals, while Emily Kelvin-Davies (Fraser Valley, B.C.) added the other.
The Blues then finished off the weekend with a convincing 15-3 victory against Carleton.
Like McMaster in the morning, the Ravens were unable to score on the Toronto defence for the first three quarters as first Jaffe (first half) and then Daniela Freeman (Los Angeles, California) kept the slate clean.
The Blues offence got going earlier, putting up a three-goal first quarter followed by a four-goal second for a 7-0 half time lead. A five-goal third quarter put the game on ice.
Tiedje again led all scorers with four goals, her third four-goal game on the weekend.
Miroslavic added a hat trick. Kassie Fraser (Vancouver) and Kraft each netted two goals, while single tallies went to Amber Masse (San Jose, California), Rhianna Wood (Calgary),
Marina Sotirakos (Toronto) and Kelvin-Davies.
Tiedje, a freshman, had a huge weekend with 11 total goals.
The Blues finished the regular season undefeated for the sixth straight year and will enter the National Collegiate Water Polo (NCWP) playoffs as the first seed.
