BLUES NOTCH TWO WINS TO OPEN QUEEN’S INVITATIONAL

The Varsity Blues women's water polo team opened the Queen's Invitational with a pair of solid victories over the host Gaels and the Carleton Ravens.

In the first match versus Queen's, the Blues jumped out to a 3-1 first-quarter lead on the strength of two counter attack goals from assistant captain Ana Miroslavic (Toronto) and another courtesy of freshman Caitlyn Tiedje (Calgary).

Toronto then added four more counterattack goals in the second quarter plus a penalty shot conversion by Kassie Fraser (Vancouver) to lead 8-4 at the half.

The Blues then exploded for six goals in the third quarter against a single tally from Queens to surge ahead, 14-5, before trading fourth quarter goals to win 15-6.

Tiedje led the Blues with four goals, while Rihanna Wood (Calgary), Fraser and Miroslavic notched hat tricks.  Captain Ali Fraser (Rancho Santa Margarita, California) netted the other two markers.

Three hours later the Blues were back at it against Carleton and put the game away with an impressive 6-0 first quarter.  The Blues won each of the next quarters 2-1 to lead 10-2 entering the final quarter and finished out as 13-5 winners.

Miroslavic led all scorers with five goals followed by Tiedje with her second four-goal performance of the day.  Fraser added a pair, while Joy Carter (Toronto) and freshman Amber Masse (San Jose, California) notched singles.
