BLUES BLANK LIONS IN SEASON-OPENING WIN

Box Score Rookie forward Louie Bieman scored two goals and added one assist as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the York Lions 7-0 in their 2017-18 season opener on Thursday night (Oct. 19) at Varsity Arena.

Veteran forward Meagan O'Brien added two goals, with rookie netminder Madeline Albert making 22 saves to earn the shut out in her first career start.

Bieman opened the scoring midway through the first period as she received a cross-crease pass from veteran Kassie Roache and made no mistake putting it in the yawning cage.

Fourth-year forward Lauren Straatman put the Blues up by two just over two minutes later, receiving a centering pass from Roache and one-timing it in from close range.

Toronto was up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The Lions found themselves in penalty trouble midway through the second frame and Toronto capitalized. Bieman potted her second of the night, skating off the boards and wiring a shot past Lions goalie Eva Hall.

U of T went up 4-0 just before the second intermission as fourth-year forward Meagan O'Brien buried a Jessica Robichaud rebound for her first goal of the season.

Third-year defenceman Cristine Chao got in on the action as she came out of the penalty box and capitalized on a Stephanie Ayres rebound early in the third period. O'Brien netted her second of the game off a goal mouth scramble midway through the final frame and Laura Ellis added an empty netter in the final minute, scoring her first career goal as a Varsity Blue.

The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow night as they travel to take on the Laurier Golden Hawks at Brantford Civic Centre. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
