The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's lacrosse team solidified there hold on fourth place in CUFLA's West division with an 11-9 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks on Sunday night (Oct. 15) at Varsity Stadium.
It was a bounce back game for the Blues after having been beaten Saturday night by Laurentian, which temporarily tied Toronto for fourth spot. But a combination of a Laurentian loss Sunday and Toronto's win handed the Blues sole possession of the fourth position.
The first quarter was tied 3-3, the Blues goals being scored by the three attack men, Jason Barnable, Darren Elliott and AJ Masson.
It was still a tight game in the second quarter as U of T outscored Laurier 3-2 to go ahead 6-5 at the half. Both Masson and Elliott scored their second goals of the game and middie Jackson Hickey notched his first.
Toronto then opened up a three goal lead in the third quarter on goals by Barnable and Masson, his third. The Hawks answered with two goals of their own, but the Blues regained control late in the period as Masson and Hickey scored again. The quarter ended 10-7 in favour of Toronto.
Laurier scored twice in the fourth quarter to make for some anxious moments, but the strong goaltending of Riley McGillis and a late goal by Barnable gave Toronto the final two goal margin of victory, 11-9.
"Riley had another great game in net for us," said Blues head coach Joe Nizich. "We are getting consistent scoring from Barnable and Elliott, Barnable being one of the best attacks in the league, but AJ Masson had his best offensive night of the season and it was good to see him going hard to the net. Their names don't show up on the stat sheet but the entire defence played a very good game too."
Masson had four goals and two assists on the night leading the Blues in points.Barnable had three goals and one assist and both Elliott and Hickey had two goals apiece. Barnable is now sixth in the league in goals scored and Elliott is a respectable sixteenth, the highest of any rookie in the league.
The Blue and White next play on Saturday, October 21 at 5:00 pm at Brock University and Sunday, October 22, at 1:00 pm at Guelph University.
