BACK-TO-BACK WINS FOR THE BLUES

Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team won their second of a three game road trip to open the new year, dropping the Western Mustangs 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Blues improve to 7-1-5-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and sit in a three-way tie for fourth in the OUA standings.

Western opened the scoring midway through the first period as forward Rachel Armstrong slid the puck past Varsity Blues goaltender Katey Teekasingh on the short side to jump ahead 1-0.

However, just three minutes later perennial scoring threat Taylor Day evened the game with a beautiful breakaway goal after forcing a Mustangs turnover for the shorthanded opportunity.

Tied 1-1 in the second, Shaelynn Waite fired a rocket past Mustangs goalie Katie Jacobs to lift the Blues into the lead heading into the third period. The goal marked the second of the season for the rookie defenceman after picking up her first career OUA goal this past Wednesday (Jan. 4) in the Blues 3-2 win over Windsor.

Seven minutes into the final frame Western forward Megan Taylor restored a 2-2 tie, tipping in a strong Mustangs shot from the slot.

It would only take 90 seconds though for Day to restore the U of T lead, finishing off a tape-to-tape pass from Kristi Riseley for her second goal of the game and eventual game-winner. Day now has five points over the last two games for Toronto scoring three goals, including two game-winners, while picking up two assists.

Teekasingh earned her second win of the season in her second straight start making 21 saves.

The Varsity Blues will end their road trip in St. Catharines, Ontario when they face off with the Brock Badgers on Friday, January 13. Puck drop is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. with the game streamed live on OUA.tv.
