TEEKASINGH SHINES AS BLUES UPSET NO. 8 LAKERS

Box Score Fourth-year netminder Katey Teekasingh posted 25 saves in leading the University of Toronto Varsity Blue women's hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the No. 8 nationally ranked Nipissing Lakers on Saturday night (Jan. 21) in North Bay, Ont.
 
With the win, their fifth straight, the Blues improve to 10-1-5-0 (W-OTW-L-OTL) and move into sole possession of third place, seven points behind the Lakers (11-2-3-2) with two games in hand.
 
Special teams proved to be the difference as the Blues went 1-for-4 on the powerplay and added a shorthanded marker, while also shutting down Nipissing's five chances on the man advantage.
 
Lakers forward Bronwyn Bolduc opend the scoring 5:27 into the game and the home team took the 1-0 advantage into the first intermission.
 
Blues team captain Kristi Riseley evened the score 7:01 into the second period. The fifth-year forward buried the rebound off a Cristine Chao point shot on the powerplay for the equalizer.
 

The two teams were deadlocked at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
 
Fifth-year forward Taylor Day proved to be the game's hero, netting the game-winning-goal shorthanded 46 seconds into the third period. The goal marks Day's 49 career regular season tally and team-leading 10th of the season.
 

Teekasingh stood on her head for the rest of the third period, posting 11 of her season-high 25 stops to secure the victory.
 
The Varsity Blues are back in action tomorrow as they travel to Sudbury, Ont., to take on the Laurentian Voyageurs. Game time is set for 1:50 p.m.
