The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's rugby team opened their 2016 season with a hard-fought 38-24 loss to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 7) at Varsity Stadium.
U of T fell behind early as the Golden Hawks opened the game with three tries in the first 20 minutes of action to build a 19-0 advantage.
However, Toronto bounced back, generating an offensive push that saw third-year Jack Davidson pound his way in for the Blues first try of the game.
10 minutes later it would be Davidson plummeting in again to make it just a one-try game, 19-14. Davidson benefitted from quick ball movement to setup a long run down the right wing.
This back-and-forth pace continued with Laurier adding tries just before and just after the halftime break, while third-year Varsity Blues player John Stewart finished off an inside run after a quick pass to keep Toronto within striking distance of the comeback, down 31-24 heading into the final stretch.
The Golden Hawks added one more insurance marker though to secure the season opening victory.
First-year Varsity Blue Mati Gordon recorded two conversions while third-year Scott Maguire added a penalty goal and conversion for the Blues.
For Laurier, Ryan Gamm and Jackson Smith recorded two tries apiece, Cameron Sandison and Darnell Marks added Individual tries and Samuel Goffin knocked in four conversions.
The Varsity Blues will now head to St. Catherines, Ontario this Sunday, September 11 to battle the Brock Badgers. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
