MACNAUGHTON, STAFFORD NAMED ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

University of Toronto soccer defender Lukas MacNaughton and rookie runner Lucia Stafford have been named the Varsity Blues male and female athletes of the week for the period ending September 25.

"Stafford wins!" is not an uncommon phrase in the world of Varsity Blues athletics, but this time it was 2016 Olympian Gabriela Stafford's sister, Lucia, doing the winning.

In her first-ever race as a Varsity Blue, rookie standout Lucia Stafford won the Western International cross country invitational in a time of 17:04.5, finishing almost a full five seconds ahead of Guelph's Katelyn Ayers.

Stafford led the Blues to a second-place team finish, just 21 points behind the 11-time OUA champion Guelph Gryphons.

MacNaughton, a fourth-year defender and co-captain of the men's soccer team, scored in each of the Varsity Blues three victories, including two game-winning goals, this past week.

A native of Brussels, Belgium, MacNaughton notched one goal in Toronto's 5-0 clean sheet victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks on Wednesday night. The architecture major followed that up by scoring the eventual game-winner in a 3-1 win at RMC on Saturday.

MacNaughton then opened the scoring, notching another game-winning goal, as the Blues topped the Gaels 4-0 on Sunday.  He now ranks second on U of T with four goals in nine regular season games.
